INGREDIENTS YOU’LL NEED FOR THIS OREO ICE CREAM CAKE RECIPE

Only 4 simple ingredients are needed to make this easy Oreo Ice Cream Cake at home, making it the perfect quick and delicious summer dessert for parties, birthdays, or hot summer days!

  • 6″ Round Chocolate Cake Layer: One 6-inch chocolate cake layer is sliced in half to create two soft and fudgy cake layers for the perfect ice cream cake base. I use one cake layer from my triple chocolate cake recipe for this!
  • Pint of Oreo or Cookies & Cream Ice Cream: We can’t have an ice cream cake without ice cream! Creamy cookies & cream ice cream adds classic Oreo flavor.
  • Cool Whip: Light and fluffy Cool Whip makes the perfect easy topping for this frozen dessert.
  • Oreo Thins: Thin Oreo cookies are layered throughout the cake for extra cookies & cream flavor and crunch.
  • 6″ Springform Pan or 6″ Cake Pan – This is the pan used to layer and assemble the Oreo ice cream cake, helping create the perfect tall bakery-style frozen dessert.

HOW TO MAKE AN OREO ICE CREAM CAKE

  1. Prepare the Cake Layer: Slice the 6-inch chocolate cake in half to create two even cake layers.
  2. Assemble the First Layer: Place one cake layer into the bottom of a 6-inch springform pan or a plastic wrap-lined 6-inch cake pan.
  3. Add the Ice Cream Layer: Spread half of the pint of softened Oreo ice cream evenly over the cake layer.
  4. Add the Second Cake Layer: Place the second chocolate cake layer on top, then spread another layer of softened Oreo ice cream over the top.
  5. Add the Oreo Layer: Top the ice cream with a layer of Oreo Thins, then place the cake into the freezer until firm.
  6. Decorate the Cake: Spread Cool Whip over the top of the frozen cake, then add another layer of Oreo Thins.
  7. Finish & Freeze: Pipe an optional Cool Whip border around the edges, then top with crushed Oreos. Freeze until fully solid and ready to slice and serve. (If in a pan lined with plastic wrap, gently pull up sides of plastic wrap to release the ice cream cake.)

TIPS & TRICKS FOR SUCCESSFUL HOMEMADE ICE CREAM CAKES

  • Let the Oreo ice cream soften for 10–15 minutes before assembling the cake so it spreads smoothly between the cake layers.
  • Chill or lightly freeze the chocolate cake before slicing it in half for cleaner, more even cake layers.
  • Line a regular 6-inch cake pan with plastic wrap for easy removal if you are not using a springform pan.
  • Freeze the cake between layers to help keep the ice cream firm and the layers neat while assembling.
  • Use a piping bag fitted with a large star piping tip to create the optional Cool Whip border around the top of the cake.
  • Freeze the finished cake until completely firm before slicing for clean bakery-style slices.
  • Run a knife under warm water before slicing to easily cut through the frozen cake layers.

OREO ICE CREAM CAKE RECIPE VARIATIONS

  • Drizzle! Drizzle layers with chocolate syrup or caramel sauce for extra flavor and richness.
  • Switch Up Oreo Flavor: Use different Oreo flavors like Golden Oreos, Mint Oreos, Birthday Cake Oreos, or Peanut Butter Oreos.
  • Swap the Cake Flavor: Swap the chocolate cake for funfetti, red velvet, or vanilla.
  • Sprinkles: Add colorful sprinkles between the layers or on top for birthdays, celebrations, or holidays.
  • Candy Toppings: Top with mini chocolate chips, hot fudge, or your favorite crushed candy pieces.

HOW TO STORE ICE CREAM CAKE

Store the Oreo Ice Cream Cake tightly covered in the freezer to keep it firm and fresh.
